...and I finally have a Spitfire on its side! Started at 7 and made a rear cradle which you can see in the pics below. A lot of head-scratching about how to get the pin the right height. Then I had some teething problems with the gears not quite meshing so had to cut and reweld those a little lower. Then I had to add some little feet for stability. Then I had to upgrade the little locking pin to an M8 high-tensile bolt as my eyeballing to guess the centre of gravity was quite a ways out :S all working nicely now though :)

For some reason I read “I have the inside of a Spitfire” and thought I was looking at a Marlin engine. I need to go to bed.

Weirdly everything looks better when it is in a million pieces. Complete opposite of my car.

Yeah if you’re going for the million pieces thing make sure you do it so thoroughly there’s nothing left attached to anything else...

...and then try and remember how it all goes back together :S

I have that too (the inside of the Spitfire car anyway), but it's scattered in a million pieces around my garage :S

Three possible problems:

(a) You’re left with two very large and obviously significant bolts and you haven’t a clue where they go

(b) You’re left with various things that need attaching and no remaining fasteners to do so

(c) Both of the above

Great work. Just stumbled on this, you should have linked it in our previous chat. Always liked the Spitfire shape, like the FHC more though (even more than e GT6, which I really like). Totally looking forward to see how this turns out. What a barrel of fun on winding country lanes.

Keep it up!

Yep that sounds like it :)

My attitude with little things is that if everything works then they’re probably superfluous.

Big bolts are worrying though :S

Definitely should have but my brain was fried by the time I was posting this!

I love the look of the FHC Spitfire too, or rather the hardtop one, which I’m welding on to make an FHC ;)

I do want a GT6 as well though, or rather I’ve got a plan to make what I call a GT16v (GT6 body with a Dolomite Sprint SOHC 16v engine).

Either that or I've just discovered that there's a possibility the Triumph-designed 2.6l SOHC Rover SD1 inline 6 might possibly fit under the stock GT6 bonnet so that's an exciting development :)

When the body gets taken down this far... I think I'll just pay someone XD

GT6/Dolly engine sounds great, needs more turbo though. Aren’t Dolly 16v a bit thin on the ground these days? Triumph bike engine + turbo...?

Also I heard the Stag V8 fits too (I haven’t really I’m just planting that seed).

Anyway I’m probably now committed to at least one afternoon this weekend browsing the classifieds for classic Brit metal, so, errr, thanks!

Yeah they’re not as common as they used to be, but they’re still about in decent quantities. The engines certainly.

If worst comes to worst you can get cylinder heads and pistons quite easily and they bolt straight onto the TR7 2.0l. You can get a good amount of horsepower out of them NA so I’ll keep it like that :) especially with the slanted head studs meaning head gaskets aren’t as solid as most engines.

I suppose if you can fit a slant 4 you could fit a Stag V8. Hadn’t thought of that one. You can actually get very decent power out of those, and they’re not nearly as unreliable as their reputation suggests.

I have thought of a supercharged Triumph triple which would be nuts, or two triples with a custom solid shaft running through the gearbox casings to an offset flywheel at the back for a 9000rpm+ 2.0l DOHC I6 :)

I suppose more than anything the stuff i do is driven by an inherant cheapskate mentality :)

I usually think ‘well i can save 200 quid if i make it myself!’

Yah, I’m obviously a big fan of NA 16v Fours, so yeah keep it that way. I remember seeing a heavily modified Dolly 16v at the Chelsea Cruise (is that even still a thing?) back in the day, he would spin turn it to get away from the cops, while they were left doing multiple point turns in their Astra. As a young lad I thought this was brill :)

The supercharged bike engine sounds like the go, that would be nuts in a stripped out GT6.

Yeah I know the Stag V8's rep is undeserved. Be good to see a sorted one of them in something, Vitesse maybe?

Hah cool :) always wanted to do one of those

The supercharged triple would be nutso. 195bhp, 9500rpm and really light.

I've always wanted a Mk2 2000 saloon with a Stag V8 and proper injection :)
